LAKE COUNTY.

February 15.—The weather continues oppressively waim. There was a shov>er last Sunday, but so "slight that it did not do much good. Water for mining 13 setting very scarce. The " oldest inhabitant" coneiders the present the driest season on record. Week-enders.—One hundred and forty week-enderß arrived in Queeustown to-night. Cricket.—A match was played at Arrowtown this afternoon between Skippers and Arrow, and resulted in a win for Skippers by an innings and 5 runs. Scores: Skippers, 103; Arrow, 32 and 66. Bowling.—This centinues to be a popular pastime in Queenstown, large numbers being on the green every evening. Tie" Arrow Club opens its green on Wednesday, 26th inst., when a number of Queenstown players intend being present. The green is looking very well at present, and should be in leal good order by the opening day. A social Is to be held in the Athenaium Hall in the evening General.—At the last meeting of the Arrow Hospital Trustees Mr G. D. Baird was unanimously re-elected chairman of thy trust for the ensuing year.—Mr A. G. Milward, formerly in charge of the Lake Wakatipu service, spent a few days in Queenstown last •week.—Constable Bonnor, who was in charge of Queenstown for some time, is spending bis holidays there at present. Deaths.—Another of the old pioneers of the Skippers district in the person of Mr John Poulter passed away at the Arrow Hospital on Sunday last. Deceased had been a resident of Skippers for a very great number of years, and was highly respected: Although he had no relatives in the district, the Skippers residents, with that generosity characteristic of mining communities, had the remains taken to Skippers, and on Tuesday " Jack" was laid to rest in the cemetery there, a- large number of his old friends attending to pay the last tribute of respect. The burial rervice wa= conducted by the Key. W. H. Doubleday (Church of England). —25ews waa received yesterday of the sudden death at Skippers of Mr W. L. Davis, who was well known and highly respected throughout the district. He hsd been a resident of Queenstown for a number of years, but for several years past resided at Stoney Creek Terrace, Upper Shotover, where, in partnership with hi» brother, he had been engaged in mining. He was a widower, and leaves a large family, all grown up. A Sad End.—Quite a sensation was caused in Arrowtown on Thursday morning last when it became known that Mr M. Corcoran, licensee of the Ballarat Hotel, had been found dead in the stable adjoining tbe hotel, under circumstances which pointed to suicide. An inquest waa held in the afternoon before Coroner Graham and a jury, when a verdict of " Suicide while temporary insane" waa returned. He had been in bad health, and for the past week had been receiving medical attention. His remains ■were taken to Dunedin yesterday for interment. Although he had only taken over the hotel a fortnight ago, the late Mt Corcoran had made many friends, and general zegtet is expreesed for his sad end. Accidents.—"While working at his lathe Mr "R. S. Stevenson, of Skippers, had the niis•fortune to injure his left hand. He received two or three nasty cuts, and had to go to the Wakatipu Hospital for treatment. He is making satisfactory progress.—Mr T. Williams, an old resident of Macetown, was admitted to the Arrow Hospital on Wednesday. He was cutting firewood on a narrow ledge, when hisi foot slipped, and he fell backwards over an embankmenc He received a severe shaking, but is now doing a® well as can be expected. Miners' Association.—The annual meeting •of tte Lalos County Miners' AswJeJaiion was held in Arrowtown this evening, and was well attended. Mr G. H. Romans and Mr S. Simmonds were re-elected president and secretary respectively. A strong committee, representative of all paits of the district, was elected. Reference was made cf the good work done by the association during the first year.
