DUNEDIN POLICE COURT.
Friday, February 14. (Before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.itf.) Theft and False Pretences. — Frank An del* Bon*was brought up on remand, charged with stealing a coot and a razor, valued at £2 ss, the property of Janies Gordon. — On January 15 the accused was staying at the Ship Restaurant, where Gordon also lived. The latter, on returning to hia room, discovered that the coat and razor were missing. Anderson on the following day requested a Mra Mary HaUiday to sell the prop«rty to a dealer, which she did for 4s 6d, and gay« the proceeds to Anderson. — In defence, accused said he saw Mrs Halliday going away with the bundle, but was- net aware what she intended doin" with it, and had not asked her to sell the property —Th«re was a second charge against Anderson for obtaining 203 from Fred Kichard Hobbs bymeans of a .valueless cheque for £4, drawn on the Bank of New Zealard 1 . Lawrence. — To this charge he pleaded " G-uiHy " ait a, previous sitting of the court.— Chief Detective Herbert, who conducted the prosecution, said the police had no knowledge of anything against accused's character. He had worked on f?rms at Waitahuna for some years, and occasionally gave way to chink.— His Worship said that, taking mio account the good character previously held by accused, and the time he had actually been in prison, ha would not order a term of imprisonment without the option of a fine, but accused must clearly understand that such would be an act of leniency The accused w<is fined £5 for the two offences, and was ordered to return the 4s 6d paid by the dealer for the pivrchase of the property. £1 to be paid to Hobbs on the cheque, and "£3 4s and cost of witnesses brought from Cathns, total £8 8s 6d, in default one month's imprisonment on each
