THE NEW TARIFF.
Australians, as a whole, had not yet had time to appreciate the benefits of the new tariff. At first a rise in prices had causerl what seemed to be a general outcry. Duties on many things had since been reduce- 1 ., and the result had been that the rise 1:1 prices had not been so very great. The aim of the new. Protection had been to promote, as much as possible, reciprocal trade with England, and at the same lime to encourage Australian industries. It had been a success, and would eventually be appreciated generally.
