SEL ECTION OF TEACHERS.
TOWN v. COUNTRY. AUCKLAND. February 5.
In moving for a return to be furnished showing the naineb of teachers who have been five years or more in their present positions, Mr Edgcumbe, at the meeting of the Education Board to-day. -aid these particulars might guide the inspectors in giving these teachers an opportunity of securing a change of appointment. Teachers had been located for \ears in d's>tricts where facilities for their improvement as teachers were inadequate. Mr M'Kenzie entered a plea on behalf of country teachers, who were in many instances excellent material, only lacking tho opportunities for improvement. Mr Stallworthy thought that there was something wrong with the system at present in use by the board. He thought that in making their recommendation 6 the inspectors should take into consideration the systems in vogue in Wellington. Otago, and North Canterbury, with special reference to back-country services. It was finally decided that the re turn should be furnished as asked for by Mr Edgcumbe; and also, en the motion of Mr Stallworthy, that the chief inspector should be informed that the present system of grading was not intended to eunersede ihe board's resolution with regard to the -election of teachers.
