OTAGO EARLY SETTLERS ASSOCIATION.
A committee meeting, held in the offie 1 © of the association on the 10th inst., was attended by -Messrs John Duthie (in the chair). Charles Duke, John Reid, William Barron. Adam Brebncr, G. L. Denniston, George Brown, rroudfoot (treasurer), Langlairds (secretary), and Dr Will. Votes of thanks were passed for the following presentations:— A handsome grjlrfamed oil painting (sft by 3ft 6in) of the s.s. Aldinga, painted by Captain Rohei;.son. latp marine Dainter, Port Chalmers. In hor day the Aldinga was noted for tho number of pjssr-ngers she brought to Otago after tho discovery of gold, and for the high rate of speed at which she was driven by her ponimander (Captain John M'Lean). To Mr Lawrence Moter, Castl» street, for "A sworn declaration on parchment, dated 12th June, 1837, of allegiance Jo her Majesty Queen Victoria," by magistrates and othei'6 in the Barony of Anderston, and ignoring any claim by the descendants of James 111 of England am? l VIII of Scotland to the crown of Great Britain. The Secretary reported that Messrs Langlands, Proudfoot. and Dr Fulton mot. members of the Motor Association with a view to combining in holding a grand gymkhana and floral fete in a ; <l of funds for tl>« Early Settlers' Hall and Motor Association. It was decided to carry out the affair. Subcommittees were appointed, Dr Fivlton elected pioeklent. and Messrs H. V. Fultorul and L. Langlands joint secretaries. Al'A 1 ' meeting of ladies was called and greafii enthusiasm shown, not only by ladies of ' the Early Settleiv' Association, but also • by many ladies who had previously taken ' leadinar parts in such fetes, and could there-, fore bring -valuable experience towards, making it the grand success all appearances at present point to. Programme and full' particulars will appear shortly. With! regard to t lie Early Settlers' Hall the position i 6 that, although Ihe building is roofed and floored, there is absolutely no funds to provide gas, seating accommoda- j tion, fittings. fee<=, fencing, and for making the approach, etc. Twenty-one new members were enrolled. A curious accident occurred fit TaihapS while the bush fires were burning just outside the town. A horse and dray backedj over an embankment and were precipitated^ into the bush beneath, which was burnings The Borough Council officials despatched! assistance, and the cart was soon got ©njj without damage. The horse wae rescued^ some little time later, singed and burnt in place 3. It is not expected to be fitf for work for a few months. The driver waa not injured. r The dead body of a man named Georga' ■Williamson was recovered by the watorC police in Woolloomooloo Bay, Sydney, t«-* cently.
