THE INSURANCES
CHRISTCHURCH, February 3.
The whole of the retail stock carried by Messrs W. Strange and Co. is insured for .1 total amount of £97,000, and all the firm's buildings in High and Lichfield streets for £32.500. the risks being spread o^er 24 different offices. The building belonging to the firm that was destroyed by the fire (previously the warehouse of Messrs Ross and -Glendining) was used for the following purposes :— The topmost storeys for the display and storage of furniture, and the ground floor for millinery and mantle showrooms, packing 1 room, and manager's office. The insurances on this building total £6000. made up as follows: — New Zealand. £1000. Victoria £1000. Royal £1000, Northern £1500, London and Lancashire £1500. On the stocks in this building the insurances totalled £14.200, made tip as follows: — London and Lancashire £2500, Alliance £3000, London and Liverrool and Globe £2000, South British £1000, Sun £1000. Norwich Union £2000, Yorkshire £2000, Royal £700. The insurances on the stock carried by Messrs Aehbv, Bergh. and Co. total £25,000. and on the building £4000. Of the total of £29,000 on the stock and building, the following are the approximate risks held by the companies mentioned: — Royal £2000. North British £5000, Royal Exchange £2000. Commercial Union £2000, Queensland £2500. National £1000. Phoenix £1000, Victoria £2500, South British £2000. Insurances on the White Hart Hotel total £16,700, distributed as follows: — Royal £5500, New Zealand £3000, Alliance £4000, Victoria £500— all on the buildings, Royal Exchange £1000 on the old poition of the building, and £700 on the stock in the bar : and the Norwich Union and North Queensland £1000 each on household furniture. The buildings, stock, and fittings of Messrs Bcath and Co. were insured for £28.025, but this does not include the insurance of p'ateglp-s. The insurance on Freeman's building is £7000 (Royal £5000. New Zealand £1000, Guardian £500, Vietoiia, £500).
Tribe and Co.'s stock js insured for £165 J (New Zeala.-id £500, Victoria *<.bO, Liverpool, London, and Globe £500, Royal £200).
The New Zealand Insurance Company hold all the risks on Hulbcrt's buftdmgs — fittings and buildings, £2400. plate-glass windows. £100; pictures and fittings, £800; —total, £3300.
At a meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Fire Underwriters' Association yesterday. Messrs Thornhill Cooper and W. Kirk (the association's fire inspectors) were appointed adjusteis for the companies interested, and Messrs A. L. Parsons (New Zealand Insurance Company) and A. C Nottingham (Royal Insurance Company) were appointed a committee to a-ssist them. February 9.
The subjoined lists give details of the net risks held by the various insurance companies over the properties destroyed and damaged by the recent fire. It is to be noted, however, that the figures do not disclose the actual amounts to be paid over to the various firms interested, as in practically every case the companies have divided their risks by reinsurances, and the totals ghen indicate only the net amount of their holdings, minus the reinsurances. In many instances reinsurances were effected with Home companies, and the amounts of these are not disclosed. The gross amounts to be paid over by the companies, it is estimated, will exceed £300,000. lhe net risks hold by the seveial companies named are as follows : —
