Notes from Greymouth.
(From Our Own Correspondent ) GREYMOUTH, February 5~ The Keep-it-Dark wash-up for January i yielded 2430z lldwt. j The New Trafalgar dredge is now being j turned round, and is dredging down the flat , towards where the niachane crossed good gold while woikaig up stream. February 6. Owing to the closing down of the Golden Fleeco mine for a time a large number of men have left the Reefton districtIn consequence of the continued dry weather the New Alpine mine is temporarily closed down. Owing to the scarcity of wafer the Big River is similarly situated^ while the lack of water is causing the Progress Company a great deal of trouble. Several sawmills have again had to close operations, no water being available for the boilers. The millers have also to have the sawdust shovelled away, the water races being dry. February 10. The number of men discharged owing to the present suspension of quartz production in the Golden Fleece mine, Eeedfton, amounts to 63, according to the pay sheet. A large proportion of these have already left the district At present operations are confined to driving by contract, m which six men are employed. The supply of air from the compressor comes from the mill at Black's Point. A meeting of the heads of local bodies on the West Coast will be convened to be held at Greymouth on Tuesday, 18th inst., for the purpose of considering ways and means in ! connection with the proposed celebration at the Otira tunnel function.
