MARINE CASUALTIES.
. <*• — STEAMER BURNED. OTTAWA. February 4. The steamer St. Cuthbert was burnt off Cape Sable, Canada. Fifteen of those aboard were drowned. v The St. Cuthbert was a comparatively new vessel, having been built as recently as 1904. She was constructed by Messrs Armstrong, Whitworth. and Co. for the British and Foreign S.S. Company. Her gross tonnage was 4954, and her dimensions were:— Length, 410 ft; breadth, 51ft;- depth. 28ft. LOSS OF THE ECLIPSE. HONOLULU, February 1. The ship Eclipse, coal-laden, and bound fiom Newcastle to San FraixLsco, foundered, and three of her crew perished. The captain and the rest- of the crew arrived at Honolulu after great privations. A steamer rescued 35 of the crew. MOERAKI IN A GALE. SYDNEY, February 5. The Moeraki, when spoken on Monday morning 150 miles from Sydney, was threshing into a heavy gale. A timber fleet experienced rough handling on Saturday and Sunday in the Tatman Sea. GERMAN WARSHIP ASHORE. LONDON, February 6. The German warship Hepsen is ashore at Cuxhaven. Four tugs are assisting to tow her off. MISHAPS TO SCOWS. AUCKLAND, February 5. The scow Defiance, which was beached a few miles from the Manukau Heads for safety during the stormy weather some six months ago, was floated by Mr G. T. Niocol and brought to Onehunga to-day. Another scow, the "tramp, has been ashore on the west coast, near the Kaipara,, for many jnonths, and if the easterly weather continues ehe will probably be got off with
