CHRISTOHURCH. January 27.

A fatality presenting some remarkable features occurred yesterday. The body of a m<u\ was found in a small guPy on Iho highest part of the Lyttelton load, near .jiimner The body was brought to Sumner, when at was found that the only appaient injury was. the fracture of one 1^ above the ankle. 'In his pocket was fouiul a notebook, with a long letter <if farewell to his wife, concluding with + ho statement that ho intended to do awpy with himself. The deceased's name was .Tames Topham, a resident of Syt'nnham. The letter was dated January 23, and it is supposed that the man died that evening. The cause of death is not known.

An inquest was held to-night, and a verdict was returned that the man, while of unsound mind, committed suicide by opening a varicose vein in his leg.
