CANTERBURY MARKETS.
CKKISTCHTJRCH GBAIN AND PRODUCE
REPORT.
(Lyttelton Times, 26th inst.) Grain is now coining forward more freely, but coma time musti elapse before the majority of farmers will be free to plac? their lines on the market. The samples of wheat which have been submitted for sale during tha week have, been of a high class and growers /eport that thia season thia cereal is weighing out exceptionally well. Sales made during the week have principally been is SU fii&ersj %« general grice psing
from 4s 2d to 4s 4d at country stations, several lines having been secured by raillers at 4o 3d. Some of the sales made dui\ng the week have been.: — 700 bushels at 4s 2d, and 300 bushels Tuscan at 4s 33, both at country stations, sacks extra. A few lines of wheat have been purchased by millers at 4s sd, ex store.
Oats are coming on the market in fair quantities, and, taken all round, the' quality has been satisfactory, although in a few cases the grain 'has been thin. Farmers are asking in most oases prices ranging from 23 2d to 2s 3d, but ' merchants are not disposed to pay beyond 2s Id, except in the case of superior lines. During the week the following sales were 1 made: — 4000 bushels duns at 2s 3d, 2300 bushels Gartons at 2s 2d, both at country stations, sacks extra. A few purchases to fill orders were made during the week at 2s 3d and 2s 4d', at a 2d station, sacks extra.
Deliveries of barley have fallen off during the week, but there is still a good demand. Prime malting barley finds ready buyers at prices ranging from 5s to 5s 6d, and medium quality from 4s 6dl to 4a lOd. Cape barley, of which there is little on the market, is selling at 3s 3d to 3s 6d.
Deliveries of grass seied have 'fallem< off, indicating that the bulk of the season's, crop is already in merchants' hands. ' No cocksfoot has yet been offeared;' but it is expected that the market will open early next month. The North Island is now bidding for rye grass seed', but nothing except guaranteed seed off four year pastures, and of 301b per measured bushel is in demand. The market for seeds is on the whole rather easier, merchants- having in a largo measure already secured sufficient for their requirements.
