CANTERBURY.
Mary Hai-ding, licensee of the Black Horse ' Hotel at Addington was fined £5 in the Police Court on the 22nd for sealing liqnor after hours, and had her license endorsed A proposal to purchase the Bank of JSew Zealand corner for widening Colombo street was submitted to the ratepayers on th.2 23rd, but was rejected by a large majority. The amcunt involved was £15,000. By the fire at Glenavy station the gtation books, telegraph instruments, etc.,
and post office material, including stamps and a newly arrived mail, were burnt, while about £80 in cash was also lost. Nothing but a few tickets were saved, though the point keys were afterwards found in the debris. Telegraphio communication was interrupted, but is now restored. The main line was buckled by the heat, and the expresses had to use the side lines.
At the Aflhburton Oourfc on the 24th, before Mr G-. Day, S.M., Gideon Scott was charged, on tbe~ information of the police,, with keeping liquor for 6ale at Ashburton. He pleaded "Guilty^' and was fined £10 and costs, an order for the confiscation of the liquor being also made. Mr C. D. Lindsay moved for and obtained an order authorising the commencement of a prosecution for alleged defamatory libel against Arthur Lonsdale Zouoh, dentist, of Aehburton, the said alleged defamatory libel being contained in a printed ciroular published there. Befora Mr Bishop, S.M., two women, were -charged with vagrancy on the 25th Both had been living in Chinese dens at Sydenham. One woman was remanded, to give her a chance ta communicate with her relatives. The -other was dismissed on the understanding that she would "get a situation, but would bo under police surveillance. The Magistrate spoke in strong- terms about women consorting with Chinamen, and expressed his determination to break up these dens. He declined to discharge the first woman, who said she would get money from her father and go to Wellington. The Magistrate said it would not be fair to saddle Wellington with such a woman.
