SOUTHLAND

There was excitement at Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island, on the 20th, when the Kekeno, a small craft laden with pleasureseekers, failed to make port after a trip to Port Adventure. A big gale was blowing directly out of the bay, and the Kekeno tried for four hours to grot in, lost some canvas, and took water aboard; and then ■gave it up and ran into Paterson's Inlet, where she spent the nig-ht. The morning was fine and calm, and Halfmoon Bay was reached shortly after 8 o'clock.

The prospects for the oyster season are good. Beds are Said to be in a promising condition, and about 60 or 70 craft will ba employed in the industry.
