DEATH OF A CRIMEA X VETERAN
AUCKLAND, January 20. An old Cfircean and Maori war veteran, in the person of Lieutenant. William Henry Herring, late of -,the Seventh Royal Fusiliers, died at his residence, Auckland. Yesterday, having passed his seventieth year last Thursday. The deceased was X native of Cheshire. He fought at the battle of Hie Alma, where he .sustained «• wound, from the effects of which he never fully recovered, and which ultimately caused his death. For the last six months he was wholly an invalid. He also fought; at Inkerman, and before the close of thecampaign was an acting captain. He camo to New Zealand 47 years ago, landing _ ab Wellington. He joined the Taranaki. Military Settlers' Corps, and, serving under Yon Tempsky, took an active part in tno Maori war in that province, being twice wounded. He leaves v a widow, three daughters, and three sons, one of tha latter being the wril-known Auckland representative footballer, Mr Frank Herring,
