m WARDEN OF CINQUE PORTS. LONDON, January 16. Lord Brassey has " been appointed. Warden, of the Cinque Porte» The Cinque Ports, or Five Ports, is the name of an ancient jurisdiction in the South of England, which is still maintained with considerable modifications and diminished authority. The original ports included were Hastings, -JRomney, Hythe, Dover, and Sandwich, but to these have been added Winchelsea and Rye and a good many other places. The incorporation of the Oinque Ports had its origin in the necessity for some means of defence along the southern seaboard of England, and in the absence of any regular navy. The oldest charter on record Is one of the sixth year of Edward I. and it refers to previous, doouments of Edward the Confesjor and William the Conqueror. The -ports had to furnish the Crown with all chips and. men needful for the - State, and in return were given certain privileges. The highest office is that of warden, who is also governor of Dover Oaetle, and has the authority of an admiral Of the porte.
