OBITUARY.
MR R.-ELLERY. , MELBOURNE, January 15. Mr R. Ellery, formerly Government l Astronomer, at the .age of 81. - Robert Lewis John Ellery. C.M.G., F.R.S., F.R.A.S., for many years Government Astronomer of Victoria and Director of Melbourne Observatory, was born iv Surrey in 1827, ' and was a son of John Ellery, surgeon. JHe was trained for the medical profession. He established the Melbourne. in -1853,- and -was [director till his retirement in 1895. '-".He I was president of" the -Royal Society of | Victoria, director of the- peodetio Survey, 'and member of- the council -of 'the TJniver- , 6ity for many yearsr- and aleo a trustee of the Public Library. He was the author of a r number of .astronomical worftß and articles. SIR J. L. WALTON. LONDON, January 18. Sir J. L. Walton, Attorney-general'; aged 61 years. Sir Joseph Lawson Walton was born in 1845, 'being the 6on of Mr Joseph Walton, of Fazakerley, Lancashire. He became, a barrister in 1868, and a bencher in 1896. He was chairman of the General Council of the Bar in 1899, and Recorder of Wieran from 1896 to 1901, when he was made a judge of the King's Bench, and also knighted.
