ALLEGED EXTORTION
LONDON, December 29. Veltheim, who is .charged with blackmailing Mr Sol Joel, has been brought from France to London in custody. January 3. Frank Veltheim was charged at the Guildhall Po±ice Court to-day with having demanded money, accompanied by menaces, from Mr Solly Joel. The prosecutor testified that he first saw the accused when he. was in the dock at Johannesburg in 1898, when he was being tried for the murder of witness's brother Barney. Witness produced at the Johannesburg trial seven blackmailing letters, ■which he now read to the court. The handwriting of these, letters was the bame as that of a letter which witness received in June, 1907. 'The writer of the last- ! mentioned letter demanded money. This 1 was followed t?y a draft for £16,000, presented through, one Millar, of Antwerp. Since the trial at Johannesburg .witness had not seen Veltheim until to-day. !
