DENTAL ASSOCIATION.

AUCKI/AND, January 6. The annual conference of the New Zealand Dental Association was qpened to-day under the presidency of Dr Herbert oox, of Auckland, president of the association. The day was devoted to clinics and a discussion on various matters of interest to the profession. In the evening a public meeting m connection with the conference was held. Ihe chairman of the Education Board (Mr L. J. Bagnall) presided, and an address was delivered by Dr Cox, in the course of. which he referred to the serious condition of things existing in New Zealand and elsewhere in respect to the teeth of the people, espeoially those of the rising generation. -He advocated the setting up of a Koyal Commission by the British Government to inquire into fclle causes of decay of the teeth. In the course of his remarks he referred to the good work now being-done by the School of Dentistry- at the Otago University. "* « &• - Speeches were also delivered "by Sir -Maurice O'Rorke, Mr Baume, M.P.- Mr I>. H. Newton (president of the New Zealand Educational Institute), Mr G. Knight (chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board), and Dr Robertson (chairman of the honorary staff'of the Auokland Hospital).

The takings at the Southland Caledonian Society's sports on New Year's Day totalled £222, as against £269 for 1907, £315 for ' 1906, and £304 for 1905.
