MANGAHAO DAM.
ENGINEERS TRIUMPH. THE RIVER BEATEN. "The site of the Mangahao dam is at present a scene of industry, - ' said Mr. W. A. Waters, engineer' to the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board, on Monday to a "Standard" reporter. Tor months the engineers and staff have toiled to divert the course of the river and have put in temporary diversion dams, floods hampered the work considerably iu the past, but the recent spell of line weather has enabled the engineers to triumph and the work is being prosecuted with all speed. Yesterday afternoon. Mangahao presented a busy scene; all the stone crushers and concrete mixers, temporary railways and cranes were working til top speed, and this had been going on till the previous night—three shifts being worked. Later in the afternoon fresh gangs of men arrived and the shifts were changed, and the animated scene continued during the night. "Only about 20(1 yards of concrete remain to be placed in position in the foundations of the dam, when the engineer.-, will be in a position to rest contented if another flood come.-.- along. The river has been beaten!"
