He commenced busi-j ueas with the Loan and Mercantile j Co., Ltd., and came to Levin | Si 1916 as representative for Messrs! ljuigety and Co., which position he! held lor some years. On retiring, no entered the motoring business, join-, ing the firm of Stillwell and Co. His ; iiealth, however, began to fail, al- : though he put up a sturdy fight, con- : tinuing to attend to his. business duties until an attack of influenza ended , fatally. The late Mr Porter, despite his disability, took a keen interest in various local "activities and in sport. Before corning to Levin he was secretary to the Masonic Lodge at Wyndhnm, of which he was a Past-Master, and also secretary to the tennis and cricket clubs, being an active member oi the local cricket eleven. . , After coming to Levin he took a prominent part- in church matters. A keen churchwarden, he Was a member oi the vestry, and churchwarden of St. Mary s Chujtcn for some years. Under his presidency the local tennis club had a notable year.
