It was pointed out that any member of the Otaki telephone exchange who desired to ring the Otaki Railway post office had to pay a fee, which was considered unreasonable. —Matter held over pending further enquiries. Mr. Morse said circulars had been issued to public men to fumigate with disinfectants, etc., yet at tho same time people living in filthy quarters got off free to the detriment of others. Mr. Moore said he knew of one person practically living in a fowl yard with fowls. —It was decided to write to the Borough Council #u tho matter with a view to bringing the matter before the Health Officer iu the hope that something would bo done. It was also agreed to suggest to tho Council that another “clean-up” week bo fixed. It was decided to ask the Fire Brigade to take steps to have certain persons connected up by telephone all night in ease of fire. A circular, as follows, was also read: “At the Chamber of Commerce luncheon on June 13, Mr. Fenlon Macpherson in his address mode ihe suggestion that, in connection with New Zealand's participation in the B. E. Exhibition, 1921, a "Postcard Day” might be organised in this Dominion, and postcards of New Zealand scenery sent to frionds or relatives in Great Britain reminding them not to fail to visit the New Zealand Court. Thu Publicity Committee endorsed this suggestion and it* report was adopted by. tho Council, tho recommendations being:—l. That a Postcard Day or Week be fixed fo-r-early in April, 1924, so that the postcards may reaijh England about a fortnight after the opening of the Exhibition. As soon a* the mail services are arrunged for next year, a day can be decided upon that will catch a convenient mail. That tho Post Office be asked to see that, as far as possible, the go forward in one mail, and that the mail bags be specially tagged or labelled. The Government Publicity Officer has undertaken to sec to publicity overseas. 2. That all New Zealand Chambers of Commerce be circularised as to the origin of the suggestion, stating that this Chamber is taking up the idea, and urging their eo-operation in what must be a valuable menus of propaganda for New Zealand’s benefit. 3. That each Chamber ask the participation of other local societies, such as Progress League, Navy League. Overseas Club, Commercial Travellers’ Club, Farmers’ Union, Employers’ Federation, Industrial or Manufacturers’ Association. Stock Exchange, Institute of Y.M.C.A., Returned Soldiers’ Association, and such other local bodies as might assist. 1. That each Chamber circularise the idea to its members and ask their wholehearted support —a reminder to members to be sent otit shortly before the date fixed for posting the. cards. A feature recommended is the sending from local firms of view cards to parent and other firms in Britain, to “The Employees ’' of such firms, tjj hospitals, ate. 5. That the New Zealand Booksellers' Association be asked to have tlie necessary quantities of suitable view cards .available. We understand the New Zealand Booksellers’ Association is sympathetic and that body will consider the matter at its next meeting. We hope to receive from the New Zealand Benksolh-rsLinta and any recommendations as to what further publicity work the Chamber might de : The. booksellers, by publicity, Such as window displays, bills-, advertisements and g»ant-iug facilities to house-to-house itinerant vendors, would greatly assist to make Post Card Day a success. t>The inscription on the cards would be j left to the discretion of the sender, but tin example might be: “This is a scone in New Zealand. Do to visit the New Zealand Court at the British Empire Exhibition.” The committee, emphasised the personal “touch” and appeal in this idea of sending view postcards, amd from a New Zealand ! national standpoint th* idea has uni limited possibilities at a very small cost, for immigration, trade must • derive a considerable benefit.” It was decided to give the matter consideration at a future date.
