The management of (he Lyric theatre has been asked to huld a children's Deunisou paper dress ball, and it is understood that one will he held iu about six or seven weeks' time.

There will be a triangular contest for the Mayoralty of Wellington, and there are thirty-live nominations tor the City Council and twenty-seven for the Hospital Board.

From enquiries made it is estimated (says the "Express") that 30 per cent, of the telephone subscribers in the Kketahunu exchange will disconnect w-hen the increased charges come into operation.

Members of the Blue Triangle Community Club are holding a meeting at 7.15 sharp to-morrow night (not at S P-iu.) for the purpose of arranging their winter programme. It is hoped there Trill be a fuli attendance, and that all interested will be on time (7.15).

A car, said to be driven at the rate of fifty miles an hour, passed round Waerenga Road corner last evening, and narrowly escaped capsizing. Two wheels were off the road while the footpath and telegraph post were missed by a narrow margin. An attempt was made to secure the number of the car but the driver kept the pace and eluded his pursuers.

It is not often that the sea-gull develops the tendencies of the kea. but such would appear to be the case on a farm adjacent to Levin. For some days, a large grey and white gull has been a frequent visitor while many of the sheep have been found wandering about minus their eyes. The owner killed some of the unfortunate beasts, leaving one unburied with poison applied to the sockets. Next day the gull was found not far away a victim to its own gTeed.

The arterial road on the Foxton side of the Wirokino Bridge is still in a very unsatisfactory condition for heavy traffic and is a. source of considerable expense to the Manawatu County Council. The road traverses low-lying and swampy ground which causes subsidence and deep ruts. The County Council applied to the adjoining local authorities for financial assistance to divert the road to higher ground but the response was *ot favourable. In the circumstances it is considered that this matter should be submitted to a Commission in order to compel other local bodies to bear a fair share of such extraordinary work. —Manawatu Herald.

Two Wellington business men yesterday visited Otaki and report that it is probable that they will open a sawmill in the vicinity of Waitohu, where there are 9000 acres of timber.

Mr Huggins. Health Officer, and Constable Satherley, to-day made their annual inspection of the local hotels. It is understood that their report will be very satisfactory.

A sale of work, arranged by the Ladies' Guild of the Methodist Church, will be held on polling day. A fine variety of side entertainments will be provided. Particulars are advertised in another column.

The Rev. O. Frost, of Levin, leaves Wellington by the Marama for Sydney on Friday next. Mr Frost has been requested by the Methodist Conference to convey the feeling of the New Zealand Methodist Church to the Methodist Church of Australasia. Which holds its triennial General Conference In the month of May in the city of Adelaide. Prior to the assembling of the Conference, Mr Frost intends visiting relatives in Victoria whom he has not seen for twelve years. During his absence from Levin the work of the Methodist Church here will be carried on by the Rev. .(. .1. Lewis, of Auckland. Mr Lewis was at one time the minister in charge of the Taranaki Street Church, Wellington, and is wellknown throughout New Zealand as a preacher of exceptional ability. A reliable horse is advertised for sale. A lady's bicycle is advertised for A good home is offered to respectable young men. A working ben will be held on the rest resort grounds on Saturday at 1 p.m. A clearing sale of furniture, etc., will lie held on behalf of Mr J. L. Williams, of Paraparaumu, on Tuesday next as advertised.

Tenders close on bat unlay for tho purchase of the engine, pump, and stand now on the Otaki Bowling Club's property. A final reminder is given of the dance to be held in the Te Horo Hall to-night in aid of the Lilac queen (Miss S. Gawler). An excellent supper, good music, and a fine floor will lie provided.

To-morrow night a paper and mask dance will be held in the Otaki Town Hall in aid of the Pakeha queen (Manakau carnival). The Tahiwi orchestra will supply the music, while the grand march will take place at S o'clock sharp. Prizes are offered for the best and most original costumes. Tickets are 3s and -s.

The ladies, who are keenly interested in the formation of a croquet lawn on tho domain, are very anxious that the grounds should be made more attractive ! altogether, and with this view have : convened a meeting of all sports bodies, and the public generally, to consider ■ ways and means of improving the i . ground.
