HALT-HOLIDAY.

To The Editor. *ir,—Oe Thursday, the 26th inst., the vital question of the statutory haltholiday will come forward for decision once mow. and will, I trust, receive its full ehar* Of consideration from all I thove qualified to vote. Much has been written amd said of late concerning the projrwjf. or lack of progress, in this town, *nd many and varied reason? har« been given for its present s tate. Certainly we do not want to be unanimous on all political questions or borough topic*, even if such were possible. Heslthy eriticism means the- advancement an* very life of the community. Hewrver. it is tire writer's humble opinion that Saturday late night is preferaid* for the well-being of our town. Facts speak for themselves, and no sane person can vote in favour of the pr«!«mt Friday niafct for business, to the eld days when Saturday was observed as the late shopping night and progr-esi was beginning to make itself felt. Ne, Sir, we made a mistake when we voted fpr Saturday early closing; let us realise it, and rectify it like Pal*ierit»* and other towns have done while opportunity offers. Certainly a universal Saturday early closing is desirable to all, if only Parliament would place it on the Statute book; but such is not likely to happen yet awhile. It ' therefere behoves us to eater for those ' who arc afar, as well as near to the tewnship,. increasing the money spent in th« Borough, which finally finds its way out again to employ and support local industry. The question of prices has, and always will be. a vexed question, but I venture to express the opinion that if clients paid cash for "bulk erdert" the same as is required of them from the "big firms," equal con- | srdwxtioa would be forthcoming from I ota local storekeepers. Regarding people journeying to Levin: We have always bean known as a travelling race. but human nature is the same the wor-ld ' over, viz., we follow the line of least 1 resistance to obtain our objective, and ! if Otaki can offer its merchandise at the ; price a; other towns, the question of purchase- can be left to human nature and reason Cfuite safely, but it is essential thkt we must realise the masim tint increased sales v.ake for smaller profit* Lee is therefore vote for Sat-ju-raay Ist*'night, and support local industry with the same vim as w «upported Clutha iTacKenzi»'s Pearson fund, tie. Waffingten. Waterside. Band,

the late paper Ball, and all will be well. —I am, etc.,

NIL DESPERANDTJH,
