Mr George Brown, of the Xararuu Tramping Club, is at present guiding u party across tlig range to Otuki, A motor-lorry, laden with benzine, was completely destroyed near Levin yesterday morning. The recent flood at Mangahao will delay the completion of phe hydro-elec-tric work for three months.
As a result of the picture entertainment, kindly given by Mr E. Morse for the benefit of the Otaki State School funds, a sum of £lO was raised. This is very satisfactory, and Mr Morse is deserving of every credit. At the Otaki Borough Council meeting last night Cr. Kilsby proposed that Councillors make a trip to the Mangahao works, and it was agreed the visit should be made. Arrangements have been left in the hands of Cr. Kilsbv.
The ship's cannon which ony_e graced the deck of the ill-fated Hydrabad—the remains of which are still embedded on the coast near Otaki —has been placed in Ihakara .Garden, Foxton, For many years the cannon was in possession of the. late Mr Andrew Jonson, and was subsequently handed over to the Foxton Borough Council, “I am certain that men were sent to the front who should never have Jiggn allowed to leave the country," said Mr G. Catley, at Wednesday's meeting of the Horowhenua Patriotic Association, when a oomruunication was read regarding a soldier who had been receiving assistance; and hospital txsapingnt oyer an extended period.
A returned man, in applying to the Horowhenua Patriotic Association on Wednesday for some assistance for his family, said he left one job because he did not like the boss, and the second one because he could not keep up with the gang on a certain Government job in the vicinity of Paekakariki. Mr A. Mackay (the Paekakariki member of the Association): ‘‘lf he could not keep up with that gang he could not have been going very fast.". (Laughter),
Sunday School at Otaki Railway will in future be held at 2.50 instead . of 10.30 a.m.
The Dandies will appear at Otaki on March Ist, and the Westminster Glee Singers about the 15th.
Messrs Howard Andrew’s Ltd., business premises will be closed for stocktaking from 1 p.m. on Monday, 19th until 8 a.m. on Thursday, 22nd.
The stall’ connected with the Lyric Pictures have offered their services free on the night of the entertainment in aid of the blind.
The benefit picture for the blind on Monday will be "The Green Temptation,’’ a high-class drama, and highclass supports. See advertisement. Weather permitting the Otaki Brass Band will render a programme at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Otaki seaside resort, when a collection will be taken up for the blind.
A deputation, consisting of His Worship the Mayor, Town Clerk, and Or. Cockrell, journeyed to Wellington this morning for the purpose of making an application for a sum of £SOOO to complete the water-works.
Two lads, who escaped from the Woraroa Training Farm last week, were traced to Hokio where they camped, after which they made their way via the beach to Waikanae, where all trace was lost of them. A bicycle is now reported stolen from Puraparaumu and it is surmised the lads have made use of it.
Mr W. H. Field, M.P., gave notice in the House to ask the Minister of Railways whether having at last improved the railway service on the Manawatu line by affording residents beyond Paekakariki a chance of doing a day’s business in Wellington he will give the Manawatu line a still further opportunity of developing and also add to the railway revenue by extending the suburban service area to Paekakariki and give favourable consideration to other requests of the suburban service on this line.
