LEVIN RAILWAY FATALITY
INQUEST OPENED AND ADJOURNED. An inquiry into the fatal collision at the Levin level crossing on Tuesday afternoon was opened at Levin before Mr W. C. Nation, district coroner. Con- . stable Bagrie conducted the proceedings. Albert Alexander Narbv, farmer, Tararua Road, gave evidence that the deceased was his wife, and was 30 years of age. He left home on Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock to go to the Levin sale. He expected some Of the family to come to town in the afternoon and take him home. While waiting in town for them he received word they had meet with ;ih accident at the crossing near the railway station. He went at once to the scene and there learned that the trap in which his wife and two daughters had been driving had been smashed on the crossing. He learned that his wife had been killed and his daughters injured, the two latter being taken on to Palmerston Hospital. He surmised that his wife and daughters were watching the train in the station and did not expect the Auckland express. The horse they were driving was very quiet. There was a clear view of the approaching train for over a mile if they had thought of looking. His daughter Jessie was quite conscious after the accident and spoke to witness. Ethel was also conscious, but was badly injured. This was all the evidence taken, and the coroner adjourned the inquest till Wednesday next. THE LA’I’F MiRS XARBY. I The late Mrs Narby, who was 50 rears of age, was a native of Grey town, Wairarapa, and after her marriage lived for many years in Masterton. About nine years ago Mr Narby acquired property in Gladstone Road, which lie visited regularly, and three months ago the family took up their residence on their property there.
