“TTIE REFEREE. ’ ’ TO-NIGHT. Something particularly attractive is announced for to-night’s change at the Lyric Pictures, commencing at 7.45 p.in. Fighting Conv.a% Tearie is starred in “The Referee,” a tale of the prize-ring and concerns the fortunes of John McArdle, a referee, who refuses to be bribed. The heroine of the story, most charmingly portrayed by Gladys Hulctte tells her dud, “Big Steve,” a gambler, that she will marry McArdle or no one. She believes McArdle to be “square.” Her belief in him is put to the test when the fact is revealed that he is going to referee a crooked light. When McArdle learns that the light is “framed” he ends the contest abruptly and calls off all bets. As an additional attraction the management have secured the big Rupert Hughes production, “The Cup of Fury,” the story of a pampered daughter of the rich—dancing, pleasure-lov-ing butterfly—who found her wits pitted against the most gigantic problem facing the country to-day. On one side beckoned the old life of pleasure, gaiety and ease; on the other side, a life of drab loti and sweat fraught with hardship and privation. And in the balance hung the fate of starving humanity. Supporting films include the latest new. ree-ls and comedy. “THE MAN UNDER COVER." FRIDAY NIGHT. Paul Porter hit the old home town from which he bad once been driven by suspicion. He found the town practically mortgaged to the hilt so that Ihe townspeople could turn over their money trustingly to a couple of slick crooks. Nobody trusted Paul Porter—and vet he was the only man to save them! Fee Herbert Rawlinsou in ‘.‘The Man Under Cover.” On the same programme is Lee Moran in “Rubber Neck.” and the sth chapter of the “Terror Trail” serial.
