DAIRY FACTOR PIGGERY

j CUMI’LALNT TO COUNTY COUNCIL. At Saturday’s meeting of the Horo- | wketuta County Council, the Clerk (Mr Goldsmith) reported that during the month a good many complaints had been received front residents in the vicinity of the smell arising from the piggery at the Levin Daily Company’s factory. He had referred the matter to the Health Department, and inquiries made by the departmental officer., found Hie complaints were well founded, and that neglect on the part of the lessees had caused tlie trouble. An asurance. tiad been received lrom tlie Daily Company that the trouble would not occur again. Dr. Watts bad stated that, if properly attended to, the trouble would soon be done away with. If not, Hie only course open "’ns that the piggeres would have to be removed. A case had happened in Wellington, and certain residents took action when the owners of a piggery failed to remove it. after promising to do so, and the Court granted an injunction ordering the removal. The same thing could happen here il nothing was done to improve matters. The Chairman (Cr. G. A. Monk) said the'Council should confirm the Clerk’s action. This was done. Cr Brondbelt. (who is chairman of the Dairy Company) stated the company had tried its best to avoid creating a nuisance, and had to deal with a difficult position, but the tenants had given them no assistance. The company, however, had now taken the reins in its own hands, and would deal firmly with the matter. Mr noggins. of the Health Department, had done everything to help. The company hoped to get control itself, which would be very much better. Cr. Boardbelt asked if he might look at the complaints made. The Clerk: They were personal complaints. The people called at Hip office. Cr. Broadbelt. said the conditions generally were a good deal better than they had been formerly.
