SHIPPING HOLD-UP.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO-DAY?
RUMOUR THAT MEN WILL RETURN. Much may happen to-day in connec tion with the shipping hold-up if gen cral reports are to be accepted as a medium of truth.
It is stated that the shipping companies will not take the men back unless the Union gives an undertaking that they will abide by the award, aad that there will be no further cessation of work in the course of a few days. So far no overtures have been made by the Seamen's Union for a statement, and never from the commencement has any word of information been given from their side of the question, although Mr Young has been approached daily. I The Mararoa is to sail from Queen's Wharf, instead of the Ferry Wharf, at | y p.m. to-day, for Lyttelton. The seamen appear to be of the opinion that as they are working under an award the shipowners have no legal power to exact any bond from the Union before engaging the men.
