OBITUARY

ALLAN GARMONT—AGED 80 YEARS.

The many l'lieuds of Air Allan Carmunt will regret to learn that he passed iwav suddenly at the Otaki Hospital this morning. The deceased, who was • : ghiy years of age last January, suflc;ed a stroke on Saturday and on Sunday morning was taken to the hospital. and despite skill and attention passed peacefully away.

The late Air Carmout was born at Dumfries (Scotland) in .tS4d, and when between eleven and twelve years of age

came to New Zealand in the Alaori, landing at Wellington. For some years lie resided in the City, and was for a considerable period a well-known draper. In 1803 he arrived in Otaki. and saw the up aud downs of pioneer life. He was proprietor of the old Telegraph Hotel, which was then situate opposite the Alaori Church, and it was here that lie made many friends by his acts of kindness. He was “mine host’’ of the building when an explosion occurred, in consequence of which mishap several sailors were killed. It was in Wellington that he married Aliss Bills, a sister of the late Airs Bright, and it was at the present Otaki bakery, where the late Air Carmout was proprietor, that Mrs Carmout died (1S90). The late Air Carmout was also a well-known book-keeper and was in the employ of Air All Chee, of Afanakau. and Air Greenlees, of Otaki. Mr Carmout was also proprietor of a hotel at Ilorokiwi for some time. While there he made many friends, and when he left the district he carried away with him the best wishes of a large circle of friends. He was always generous and generally respected, besides being one of the sturdiest of pioneers.

The late Mr Carmout was the first white man to take up residence in Owki, and his accounts of the early history of the district were always most interesting.

A grown-up family of eight are left to mourn their loss, they being Tom (Auckland), Charlie (Hamilton). Fred tFoxton). Herbert (Otaki). Airs George Be van (Otaki). Mrs J. I,origan (Auckland). Airs W. Henderson (Auckland), ami Mrs McLaughlin (Hastings). Mrs •Speak, who died in the Old Country, was also a daughter. Airs Jessup, of Wellington, is a sister to deceased, while there are 31 grandchildren and lo great grandchildren.

The late Air Carmout resided with his son. Herbert, for some time, and much sympathy is extended “Tiny’’ and the other members of the family at their bereavement.

Strange to say to-day is the birthday of the late Mrs Carmout, Mrs Bevan, and of one of the granchildrcn. The funeral takes place on Wednesday,
