OTAKI LITERARY CLUB.

Although a very eold night there was a capital attendance of members at the Club's fortnightly mectiEg on Wednesday evening. The matter of altering the meetings from Wednesday to Monday was discussed, and it was unanimously decided to make the alteration. The Club will therefore meet in future on Monday following the dates $n the syllabus. The subject for the evening was: a debate, "That the system of settling S»tuTned soldier? on the land as adopt ed by the New Zealand Government has been a failure." The leader for the affirmative was Mr T. Collins, who. in a clear and well-arranged sper-ch defined the Government's policy adopted by other parts of the Empire, and h»w hopeless, under the system, was the soldiers' struggle for existence. Mr

IC. F. Atmore, L.L.8., leader for the i negative, spoke in defence of the pol- ■ icy. and outlined lucidly the motives wMch influenced the Government in patting the soldiers on the land. Both leaders were ably seconded —the affirmative by the Rev. R. P. Keall, and the negative by Mr W. H. Wills, B.A. Interesting and useful contributions to the debate were also made by Mr L G U.vrrj, i;.. ind U«e Wini-

fred Patterson. At the close of the debate a-vote wai taken when the affirmative was carried. A couple of recitations by Mr W. Lomry, keenly enjoyed by all present brought a happy sind instructive evening to a close.' At tee next meeting of the Club Mr [ Byron Brown (assisted by members of the Soeiety) will give another of his Shakespearian recitals. Those who were fortunate enough to be present at his previous recitals look back trpoa them as among the moat enjoyable and profitable evenings' they have ever •pent. The recital will be oj»*n to all who care to attend, whether members or a«t, and it is fully expected that the Druids' EaU will be teacsd to- its ■utmost to accommodate the audience. The recital will take place en Monday, July 27th, and will commence at 7.30 -n.m.
