Hurkness and F. -J. Ryder. MANURE WORKS NEAR SCHOOL til’i'E. TTie Wellington Board oi Education stated it bad been informed of a proposal that had been before the Council loi tiie establishment yf manure works within about four chains of the recently acquired school site at Poroutuwhao ,uud the Boat'd was couuuuHieating with the Health Department with a view to the work being established tit. a greater distance from tiie school. Tiie Board wished to enter no laeliuus objection to the undertaking, which itsell was quite commendable, but it felt that the Council would concede the advisability ot arranging at the otitsei for the setting up of such a manufacture in a place which would not jeopardise Hie welfare of the children. Tiie chairman said he hud no further iniorniaiiun on the matter. The Clerk said the local inspector had hnumied him negotiations were going on that it was hoped would prove satisl'actory. The mailer was referred to the engineer and councillors, with power to act. WATER RACE DEVIATION. Mr J. P. i’rouse. Levin, wrote on behalf of the Janies i’rouse estate, asking lor permission to divert- a water race to another portion 01 the property and return me race at a potni 70 chains lower down. The chairman s'ard there was a weakness in that ilie ptoperUy might bo sold, and it might be found that the Council would be expected to maintain the race. He moved that the engineer and councillors for the riding inspect the race and report. The motior was agreed to. SOLDIERS’ RATES. Two returned suluiers in iite Wm>kino riding wiote stating that they were not in a position to pay their rates at the present- time, but offered to do maintenance work on the roads to the amount owing. The engineer said if one request of the kind was granted, there would be others. The chairman: Where' returned soldiers are doing their best they should be assisted. (Hear, hear.) He suggested leaving the matter in the handsof the engineer to come to some arrangement by which the soldiers would be employed under supervision of the Council’s roadmen. TTiic wac ricrrpprl to.
