Penman, the well-known trainer, has been offered a big inducement to take up residence at Auckland, but has turned the proposal down. It is probable, how over, that he will add more igj^^eMjisstriri^a^nearfvdate^^^ racing land meeting, and much interest was taken locally in the Great Northern Hurdles of 2500 sovs. on account of Fisher, Otaki-owned, competing. He, however, only ran into second place being beaten by Poanui. On the second day he ran unplaced. The sum of £39,532 10s .was put through the machine for the meeting as against £48,940 for the last June meeting. On the first day at this meeting £22,836 was put through as against £23.- j 010 for the corresponding day last year, j while for the second day £16,996 10.- j was put through against £2*3,930, a de- j crease for the meeting "of £9107 10s. j This is satisfactory considering the < financial position of the country at the present time. ' The ten shilling tote was an innovation, and the Chib is to be-.commended' for its action. . ■:■
