A DISGRACEFUL AFFAIR.
♦— FOOTBALL REFEREE BADLY INJURED. A disgraceful incident took place at Shannon on Saturday during the progress of the Shannon juniors-Levin Rover match. As a result of disputing the referee's decision it is alleged that members of the Shannon team severely assaulted the referee (Mr E. H. 'Claridge) in such a manner that he had to be Temoved to the Palmerston North hospital suffering froin a broken jaw and other injuries. Members of t e Horowhenua Rugby Union made investigations yesterday, and it is understood that the police will lay charges for assault and for using obsence language against .members of the Shannon team.
