A SLIPPERY CUSTOMER.
ARRESTED AT PALMEKSTON. A stranger to the district has mnde his presence fell in Otaki dining the past few days, ho having obtained goods by means of valueless cheques. Two local business men suffered to (he ' extent of £lO each while another is the poorer by £5. A warrant for the man's arrOsj has been issued. it is understood that the man. who signed himself as M. J. Smith, also forged chi-mics at Foxton. Later. Robert .Tames Roberts was arrested at l'almerston North yesterday on charges of securing money by means of false pretences til Otaki, Foxton and Wellington. Roberts was returned on remand to Wellington yesterday afternoon.
