j CHARGE OS 1 PALSE P&2TSNCES. At the Police Court on Wednesday afte-rnoon a man named Grant, a stranger to the district, was charged that he did, by falsa pretences, obtain the sum of £1 from Percy Hunt, of Waikanae, and a like sum from James Johnston, of Paraparaumu. Constable Sathe-rley sttitcd that the accused saw Hunt, told him thr.l he expected money and on the strength of it got £l. He aftorwaids sav, Johnston, slept in llw same room at the Railway Hotel, and ' was drinking with l-.ini .t the Telegraph ■ when apprehended. lie got £1 from J John: ron. stating Ire could get a 300 to 5 double on Sir Soto and Wamba, and would wire the money away.
Accused, who pleaded guilty, stated that he obtained the money in both instances but fully intended to pay it back.
Grant, who had quite a number of convictions against him, was sentenced to a month 's imprisonment.
