OTAKI LITERARY CLUB.
» At a committee meeting of the De bating Club held on Friday it was de cided to open the season on Wedncs day, 31st May, at 7.30 p.m., with ; musical evening and social. A sub committee was set up to make the lie cessary arrangements, and it is antici pated that a very enjoyable programme will be provided. The committee ex tends to all persons irrespective of theii being members a hearty invitation tc be present. There will be no charge for admission and supper will be provided. A very attractive syllabus for the session has been drawn up by the committee, which is printed bolow in detail. For the convenience of members, the meetings have been changed to Wednesday evenings, ami will be held fortnightly from the 31st May. The Club has now been established in Otaki for a considerable number of years, and in view of its educational and interesting character is becoming increasingly popular with the Otaki people. In modern-"days there is a marked tendency for people to neglect the pleasures afforded by a study of our English literature and to seek enjoyment of a rapid and superficial nature by a. too persistent patronage of the theatres, billiard saloons and other places of amusement. Such forms of amusement admittedly quite legitimate and useful can never satisfy the requirements of an educated community. Otaki is singularly fortunate in having the stimulus of a literary club, and it behoves all those who arc interested in our literature and their own intellectual pleasures and advancement to give to the Club their whole-hearted support. This they can do by their attendance, j and the linking of an intelligent inter- 1 est in the meetings of the Society. The ! committee anticipates that the number 1 of our members for the current year will be even greater than in the past few years. The annual subscription of 2s 6d is certainly very moderate and. within the limits of all. Syllabus. May 31st.—Opening social, Mesdames . Bills and Harper, and Mr C. F. Atmorr | to arrange.
