HOROWHENUA COUNTY.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. A meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was hold on Saturday, the chairman, Mr G. A. Monk presiding. Others present were Messrs Bryant, Ryder, Whyte, Barber, McLeavey, Harkness, Broadbelt and Knox, Correspondence.
A communication came to hand from the Department of Industries and Commerce stating that a statement was recently submitted to the Department urging that the commercial and industrial interests of the Dominion should receive special consideration to enable manufacturers capable of providing New Zealand’s requirements to assist in relieving the distress in consequence of unemployment through the present industrial depression. It was alleged, continued the letter, that local bodies in making arrangements for supplies especially of iron work did not give due consideration to New Zealand products. Accordingly the Department would be pleased to receive a statement showing to what extent iron work supplies were purchased from New Zealand manufacturers. —Received. The Medical Officer of Health reported that a paddock near the Waikanne school and used by Airs Thompson for grazing cattle contained a large quantity of manure and that the nuisanco so caused should bo abated by digging the manure into the gardens. —The chairman said he had no knowledge of any paddock being in the condition mentioned. If the Council would agree to the engineer and he looking into it they would do so.—Carried.
ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr Anderson) reported: Although the weather lias been very broken during the period just ended the work throughout the County has been satisfactory. The motor lorry has been engaged in carting metal to different parts of the Wirokino riding but mostly on to the Foxton Road. The new oil engine came to hand during the period and se far is giving every satisfaction and is at present driving tho crusher in the Bartholo-
: mey Road pit. The roller being no longer required for driving the crusher is now 7 on the roads again and is at present engaged , in rolling the main road Weraroa Setj tloinent and from there will go to the i Foxton Road. | The crushing plant is now in first • class working order and is turning out t its full capacity of metal. j During tho last four weeks 1770 cu- | bie yards of metal has been distributi ed through the County. I There is practically nothing to rei port on in the Tokomaru riding. Some further work has been done in the vicinity of tho Tokomaru bridge, a culvert has been replaced on the Buckley Road and pipes are on the ground for , the culvert in Pretoria Road. ; In the Wirokino riding the work carj ried out has been mostly, on the main roads. The Levin-Foxton road is iu a i very bad state and I would like the : Council to decide at this meeting to ■what extent repairs should be carried out. It is my intention to metal dur- ‘ ing next period Arapaepao Road and ! part Gladstone Road. Material has been ordered for the extension of the water service to Messrs Deacon and | Jeffries properties and a start will be : made with the work whenever this uiai terial tomes to hand. | Otaki Riding: There is nothing of importance to report in this riding. Protective crates have been put In at the Waitohu bridge on the Waitohu Valley Road, also at the Waitohu bridge on the main road. In the Te Horo Riding the main * roads are now- in fairly good order, a > good deal of metal having been put ' out during the month, and the cleaning I of the Ngarara main drain has been I practically completed.
