SHIPS' OFFICERS FOR EIGHT-HOUR DAY.

—_ $ UNION COMPANY'S OFFER REJECTED. Wellington, April 4. i Members of the Merchant Service j Guild have taken a ballot on the question of accepting an offer by the Union Co. of modified working conditions. The company agreed to continue the current rate of wages cf officers until the Arbitration Couri made a pronouncement on the wages question, provided that officers agreed to certain changes in hours and working conditions. The result of the ballot has been a refusal to accept the company's offer on the ground that it would mean a reversion to 56 hours a week, and would break the principle of an eight-hour day.
