; The "Taranaki Daily News" says: — 1 The slump in cattle seems to have | struck the Jerseys too. At a coastal sale last week a live-months-old pediI gree (guaranteed) Jersey bull, in good .aiiek, sold for eight shillings. We understand (says the "Clutha Leader") that a breach of promise case of much interest is pending. A fashionable lady, having obtained a change of venue from Invercargill, will appear at Clinton to-morrow. The legal fraternity and witnesses will be much in evidence.
Mr Clement Wragge reports that the eruption of Mount Etna, with other happenings, is ample evidence of the way in which the earth is responding to its bombardment by the wireless waves of the recent solar storms, and it appears highly probable that further eruptions in the sun will shortly be manifested.
The general public of Otaki and district will have an opportunity of assisting to erect memorial gates for fallen soldiers at the Wernroa domain (opposite Railway Station). On Friday next there will be a shop day in Otaki, when cakes, produce, etc., will be sold and competitions held, the funds raised to be devoted to the abewe purpose. It is hoped that the effort will meet with every success.
Mr E. Looser, the local jeweller, has submitted sample* of gold and silver mt.dals to the Otaki Amateur Athletic Club which for workmanship will take hentinc. Mr Looser, who is an enthusiast, is offering the medals at a very low cost, an act that is fully appreciated by alt members. Mr Looker supplied the medals for the Surf Club, and is prepared to manufacture to the order of any athletic body. We commend Mr Looser on his fine work which should not be lost sight of by any body requiring medals.
The euchre tournament, held in the Druids' Hall on Monday night for the purpo.se of raising funds towards- the erection of gates at the Otaki rert resort site, was well attended, and a pleasant evening was spent, Mr Walter Bills secured the gent 'a prize in the euchre tournament, while Mrs OlliVer secured the one given for the ladies. The men's booby was secured by Mr Norman Watts, while the ladies' consolation was won by Mrs A. Smith. The ladies provided an appetising supper, while Mr G. K. Syrnpnds provided good music for the dance that followed.
An example of the generosity and [public spirit of the Chinese? community ! was brought under the notice of the I Otago University Council at its last ! meeting. Mr H. D. Skinner, assistant I curator of the museum, reported that i the Chinese community had contributed ! a sum of £33 for the purchase of display cases at the museum. The council agreed to express its warm thanks to the donors. The eases -arc intended specially for the exhibition of a collection of Chinese curios and objects d'art, and one has already been set in position.
