THE BEACH CARNIVAL.
SEVENTY COMPETITORS PROM WELLINGTON. Matters are progressing most satisfactorily for the grand carnival at the Leach on Saturday. Island Bay, Lyall Bay and Worser Bay are each sending a team of eight men. Maranui is sending two teams, and there is a chance of getting a ladies’ team to compete, l’aekakariki is making an effort to he represented, and will bo if the railwaymen can get off for the day. There will be fully 70 competitors from AVellington alone. Mr Duffy, of the Royal Life Saving Society, has been appointed judge of the life-saving events. This appointment is very populai among the clubs, as they have every confidence in Mr Duffy, who is an expert swimmer and life-saver himself. The carnival has created interest among swimmers at Levin, and information was received this morning that a contingent from the northern town will be among the competitors on Saturday. The Otaki Band will be present on Saturday ai.d will assist in the enjoyment and success of the gathering : with a programme of music. ■
