PERSONAL.

Mr F. G. Davies, borough clerk and engineer, returned on Saturday from the engineers' conference at Wellington. He stares that some excellent papers were read, and various engineering works under construction were visited, the conference proving very instructive and informative.

Th.s death occurred at the Otaki hospital on Friday morning of Mrs CartTier, of Ohau, and formerly of Wellington. The deceased lady had been ailing for some time, but only became an inmate of the hospital a short time ago. The funeral took place in Otaki on Saturday, the Eev. Mr Petrie officiating. The late Mr; Gartner was formerly on the office staff of Mr J. P. Brandon, who was among a number of friends at the funeral on Saturday. Tne funeral of the late Miss Ellos Gook took place on Sunday afternoon in the presence of a very large gathering which assembled to pay the last. mark of respect to one who was'held in general esteem. The- Otaki Band led the cortege to the Maori Church at Kangitea. playing en route the Bead March in "Saul," and at the

graveside gave an impressive rendering of "Lead Kindly Light." many
