Freeman, secretary of the Foxton Racing Club, and secretary of the Mauawatu and West Coast Licensed Victuallers' Association, is about to commence the work of organisation in connection with the licensing election, which is expected to take place about the first week in December. He states that while the borough employees were conveyed to I'limmerton and back last week for 4s (id apiece, the authorities charged him 2s 8d to bring a cat from the same place to Palmerston. ft is reported that a ballot is to bo taken among the railwaymen of New Zealand on the question of striking against the proposed reduction in wages. If is stated, also, that unrest prevails amongst the Post Office employees and other public servants, and that the decision of the railwaymen will influence that of other branches of the service. In the House of Representatives, ~MK W. H. Field (Otaki) moved that the-to-tal vote of £250,0011 (on account) for carrying on the works authorised by thd Railway* Improvements Authorisation Act. 11(14, be reduced by £IOO as an indication that the Palmerston scheme should not be proceeded with.
