JAPAN’S CENSUS
OVER 77 MILLIONS. The following interesting particulars referring to the latest census returns of the population of the Japanese Empire on October I have been cabled by the Imperial Japanese Government to Mr K. Tamaki, Acting Consul-General in Sydney. • Total population of the Empire. 77,005,510, composed as follows: —.. Japan proper .... 55,961,140 Korea 17,284,207 Formosa 3,654,398 Saghalicn ..... J 05,765 These figures, the- cablegram stales, are less by about 1,000 than the estimated population in 191 S. The decrease. however, is stated to be due not to any actual loss, but to the inaccuracy of the method employed in making the former estimate. The total population of Japan proper consists el 25,042,095 males and 27,918,145 females, being 124,350 more males than females. The populations of the principal towns are given us follows: —Toki". 2,173,162; Osaka, 1,252,072; Kob' • 608,200; Kyoto, 501.305; Nagoysa, 429.900; Yokohama, 4422,942.
