The annual breaking-up and distri bution of prizes took place at the AVai kanae school on Thursday last. .1
number of parents and friends were 1 present. The chairman of the school 1 committee, Mr T. Brown, welcomed the j visitors and expressed himself as well t pleuseTT at the way in which the l parents had turned out, and hoped that i this was the beginning of a more lively interest- being taken in the i affairs Of the school and its scholars, i it was'explained by Mr Brown that this was the first occasion for juany years that prizes were given at the : breaking-up. It. had been announced i ut the beginning of the year that any surplus remaining from the picnic fund collection at that time would bo donated to awarding of prizes for good wots done by pupils during the following" year. The committee thought that by doing this it would be inducing scholars to take more interest in then work with a corresponding benefit to the school, ami he was pleased to say that the past year had proved to be the most successful he had know tt. This was also born out by the inspector's report, which was most satisfactory. At the proficiency examination recently held a 100 per cent pass v. as recorded, and the teaching staff was to be congratulated on the very good results achieved. Mr Brown also pointed out that (lie school only needed another live or six pupils attending to qualify for a third teacher. There were af present eighty pupils iu about j ten different classes which are attend- j oil to by two teachers, so that bv get- j ting an extra attendance of pupils they would also get n third teacher, which | j should relieve tlio present staff to the J advantage of the. school generally.
