FRIGHTFUL MOTOR SMASH
MOTOB RUNS AMOK. FIVE SENT TO HOSPITAL. Wellington. December 15. Just as the people were coming out of the theatres to-nighi si motor car, with a solitary occupant, clashed through the city streets, the man at the wheel shoutiug at the top of his voice: ".pel out of my way!" Eyewitnesses say that the car appeared quite out of control and was travelling at a'very high'speed. The ear negotiated several corners safely, but on reaching the junction of Manners and Cuba streets dashed through u crowd of people waiting for trams, and collided with a standing tram. It knocked down a woman who was about to enter a tram car. struck others, and then, with a child locked under its wheels, slid right across to the other side of the road, where it Struck a number of pedestrians. A scene of great confusion followed, and the exact information regarding those injured is at present unavailable. It is reported rhat five persons have already been taken to the hospital. The number includes the man who is. said to have driven the car. who is in a critical state. One woman suffered from a compound fracture of a leg; another had an ankle broken, and many others received minor injuries.
