The champion rose at the Otaki Rose Show on Friday was a glorious "Gorgeous," exhibited by our local rose enthusiast. Mr H. Witchell. It was of enormous size, good colour, and fairly good shape, and was greatly admired. The Dunedifl Education Board has resolved: That the Board view with alarm regulation 27. and enters an emphatic protest against the substitution ol" female assistants for males in large schools. It also protests against regulation.-, of this kind being brought into operation until considered by those who administer education. It was resolved to ask other boards to support this protest.

An attempt, i,- being made to slart a branch of the N.Z. Sports and Pastimes Club at Otaki. If is understood that, if formed, this club would affiliate with the New Zealand head body, and have control of all sports and pastimes, such as athletics, boxing, football, hockey, cricket, etc. Suehr a body would prove of great benefit to sport generally, and help to centralise various sports organisation., in Otaki, thus assisting the town. Any persons willing to convene a public meeting to discuss the matter should leave their names with our local hairdresser, Mr L. Hansby. who is an enthusiastic sport.

Amateur gardeners have been troubled this season with wood lice in their gardens. The pests seem to form colonies round the roots of flower ami vegetable plants and weaken the growth. Under dead leaves and in dry places the pests will always congregate. Air F. Mason informed a Feilding pressman that a weak solution of Condy's or Jeyos' fluid poured round the roots of the plant will exterminate the lice, without injury to the plant.
