HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING, $ Tlic ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held at Wellington yesterday. Present: Crs. F. G. Cooper (chairman), W. J. Howell, M. W. Welch, J. Whiteman, P: Cavanagh, John Barclay. Correspondence. Correspondence was read and deal! with as follows: — From P.W. Department giving estimates of cost of bridges which it was suggested to build on various roads. Other bridges required ordinary main -tenanive by local bodies. —It was do cided to write Mr Field informing him that the Council intended calling a special meeting on the 29th inst. at 2.30 of delegates of local bodies interested. It was also agreed to thank Mr Field for tire interest ho had displayed in the matter. From the Auckland City* Council, relative to the coal shortage and output, and asking that the. Government lie urged to take Decided to refer the matter to the members for the Hutt and Otaki electorates. From Wellington Pacing Club draw j ing attention to the bad state of the | road to the racecourse, and offering to assist in improvements it the Council j would also assist. —Cr. Barclay moved that necessary action bo taken, but Cr. Whiteman held that the road was a private one and that the Council had no power to do work there. * Cr. Ho wall said a regulation oi traffic was necessary, while the Chairman said the road belonged to the Crown.—Decided to do half the repairs. From IM. Maclean re main road drains through Hadiield Soldier Settle-ment-Decided to take steps to create a drainage area. From T. S. McGuire, asking for repairs to the road opposite the Pnrkakariki Hotel where there was a veritable lake, while an overflow from the trough caused much annoyance. —Referred to the incoming Council, on the recommendation of Cr. Hotvelt. who agreed something should be done. From A. J. Earley (Paekakariki), asking that the proposed water supply scheme be given further attention Cr. Howell suggested making application to the Government for a loan ot £(1000. If this was not granted it would Vie no good taking further steps. —Suggestion agreed to. From A. J. Earley (Paekakariki). asking for particulars of the Mnugahao hydro scetne. Decided to reply that there was nothing to report. From C. B. Hoove asking for improvements to the approach to the Pavaparaumu school. —Referred to the inspector. From C. B. Reeve and others asking tor improvements at Warrimoo street at Parnpuraunni. —Referred to the inspector. Cr. Howell said other -ini- j jii'ovemonts were necessary in the locality, but he thought the matter best left for the incoming Council. — Agreed to. From Perone Technical School, asking for a donation towards its funds. — Usual donation to be given. From the P.W. Department declining to give a giant for damage done to roads during the curtailment of the railway service.—Reeelved. From Man gait no Hydro - electric Eeague stating a meeting of members would be held at Palmerston North on November 17th, and asking that a representative of the Council attend. — Letter received, Cr. Barclay strongly contending that it was a waste ot' time •and money to send a representative. Cr. Howell took an entirely different view, and said the Council should be represented. Inspector’s Report. The inspector reported that since the last meeting two wings had been -added to the southern end of Silverstream bridge, while formation and metalling had been done at Lowry Bav. A 36in concrete culvert had been put. in on the Muiigakotukutuku read, near Mr Wilton’s, and other repairs to the road were now in hand. Hayward’s road had been attended to. and was now in very fair order, while water channels had been cleared. The dangerous parts of Mungaroa to Upper Hutt road had been securely fenced, cne plaee in particular, where the recent sad fatality occurred. The fence had been shifted to the top of the formation, which would prevent an accident of a similar nature. He had inspected the proposed Toad line on Mr Maclean’s property at the north-west-ern end of Kapiti road near Paraparaumu. and recommended the approval of the plan as submitted to the Council. The route chosen was one of the best obtainable on the estate. Report adopted. Damage to Roads. $ The P.W. Department wrote stating that no abnormal damage was done to roads through the curtailment, of the railway traffic. The Chairman said it was now a year or more since it had been decided to apply for compensation. He was of the opinion that the best to be done was to treat the letter as received—he had no wish to light the P.W. Department. Cr. Howell said the Department asked fo# applications for a grant to be put in. The Council did so and put in a very low demand. It was decided that the letter be received
