In all probability the Otaki Brass Band will play at the annual sports at Paraparaumu on Mew Year’s Day. “Eemeinber the sth November,” and buy your fireworks from Messrs Trueliglit and Co. Last week’s flood in the Shannon district is said by the oldest residents to have been the worst for the past twenty years. Attention is drawn to Messrs Wardell Bros, and Co.’s new advertisement in to-day’s “Mail.” Readers aro invited to send for detailed price list. At the inquest held at Levin on Monday on the body found in the Hokio beach on Saturday, Mrs Elizabeth Ensom. of Paten, identified the clothing on llie body as that belonging to Ebor Watkins, who had been missing from Patea since October 20tli.
The opening of the season in connection with the Ilautere Rifle Club will take place on Saturday next, when a match of seven shots at — l "t yards will be fired, it is hoped that there will be a large number of riflemen as well as others present.
Messrs S. A. Broadbclt and W. Murdaeh being the only nominees for tie election of two representatives of the Horowhenua County on the Palmerston North Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, these gentlemen have been declared duly elected.
The monthly sitting of the Otaki ,s.M. Court takes place tomorrow, while the County Council will meet on Saturday next —a week earlier than usual on account of the elections. The Otaki Town Board meet to-morrow night.
The Otaki flower show, to have been held on Wednesday, 17tli inst., has been postponed till Friday, 19th, on account of the Horowhenua races falling on the former date. Entries will now close on Thursday, 18th, at noon. Intending exhibitors should bear this alteration in mind. On Saturday next, at the Otaki Auction Mutt, Mr Gerald Anderson will sell, under instructions front various owners, a large,and varied lot of dairy utensils, tools, household furniture, and miscellaneous articles. A motor cycle is also to lie offered. Tinlist under offer is a very large one. and there should be a good attendance at this sale, to commence at 2 p.m.
Mr is. Hall, the well-known dcuti of Levin, has engaged a first-cla
assistant, which will allow Mr Hal! to personally visit Otaki once weekly. This arrangement, however, will not take effect til! after the New Year, but in the meantime Mr Hall will lie pleased to see Otaki and district residents at Levin.
The Levin Rover Football Club held a social function on Friday night, when the presentation of medals was made as follows:—Best back. J. Bishop; most improved back, C. Ivclleher; best forward, R. Tantrum (Mr C. Wildsmith’s medal), most improve! forward, L. Williamson. Messrs Ford and Fail were also the recipients of presentations for help given. -Some two or three local gentlemen have just been enrolled as honorary members of the Otaki Brass Band at. a subscription of 10s fid per annum, treeing that the band is such a worthy and valuable institution, it is hoped that a large number of others will fob low suit and hand in their names to the secretary (Mr J. Fielding) honorary members. Larrikini-m still prevails in Otakb while thefts are continually made from Chinese residents. Messrs True-light and Co., our local fruiterers, now report the loss oi a large window -cover, which is of but little use to the thief but valuable to the owner. The matter is now in tie hands of the police, but to save trouble it is hoped the cover will be returned at once. The Addington railway workshops hand- decided by ballot on Monday that trie works be closed for the w helot next week (Cup carnival week). The toting was: Jn favour of closing Xml. against J6O. The manager of th--work,shops thereupon put up a notice that the works would be closed from November 6th to 15th. The loss of wages to the workers as a whole will be £3OOO. Work, however, will be pro vided for -ome of the hands. It. habeen the custom in the piast for a large number of the men to take their annual leave during carnival week. Mr J. D. Howell, licensee of the Central Hotel, Otaki, is leaving no stone unturned to make this hostelry one of the most popular and up to date on the coast. He has just had installed ■•■ a e! e ctrie light system, up-to-date in very particular, which will light very room in the hotel. The plant is orking beautifully, and is a great nprovement. This is the first electric siting plant installed in Otaki busies* places, and Mr Howell is to be ommended on his enterprise. Messrs, lord and Skand did the necessarv fit- : ug.
