A HARSH SENTENCE.
THE PUBLIC AROUSED. The severe sentence imposed by the S.M. in an assault case heard at Otaki on Thursday last—the subject of :i leading article in the “Otaki Afail” iast issue—lias aroused considerable public interest. The views expressed by the “Afail” are supported largely. Mr and Mrs E. Hopkins have interested themselves in the matter, and Airs Hopkins on Saturday communicated with Mr AV. 11. Field, member for the district, and, through him, made urgent representations to the Minister for Justice, who promised to make tho fullest enquiry into the metier. Other protests were made to the Minister of Justice by Otaki citizens, and Captain Bax telegraphed a strongly-worded protest to tho Alinis-' tor, an behalf of the returned soldiers of the town and district. A public meeting has been convened by a number of our prominent, townspeople, to bo held at the Druids’ Hall to-night, for tho purpose of protesting j against the severity of the sentence i imposed on the convicted man in que - i lion, and considering the best steps to be taken to secure a remission of the | term of imprisonment imposed. In ! view of the public interest created, a i large anil representative meeting is j expected. Owing to another function being held the meeting is j fixed for 7 p.m. sharp. <
