HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

♦ , MONTHLY MEETING. Tho ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held at Levin on Saturday. Present: Crs. G. A Monk (chairman), J. It. AVhytc, Ji. Barber, .las. AlcLeuvey, S. A. Broad belt, !•'. Coley, W. J. Bryant, and C. I. Ha rkness. Cr. Ryder was granted leave of absence. Correspondence. Correspondence wus read aud dealt with as follows: From P.AV. Department exempting the southern line of portion of old | cemetery road at Otaki for widening purposes, and enclosing gazette notice. —Received. From Minister of Public AVorks, Acknowledging the Council’s resolution in connection with tho proposedelectric Power Boards Amendment Bill, and stating it would receive careful consideration. This was the outcome of the recent conference at Levin. —Received. From AV. IT. Field, M.P., offering to do all possible in connection with the proposed lowering of the Horowhcnua Lake, but the main difficulty, he presumed, would be with the Natives. Tho Chairman said the settlers .intended to push this matter and have the work done. In view of this he suggested that the matter be left over for the meantime. —Agreed to. From A. 11. Free (Tokomarn) complaining of rubbish being emptied opposite his house and thus causing a menace to health.—Agreed to summon offenders, it being pointed out this was a common offence in many parts of tli • County. From Best. Bros. (To Hero) asking for the Council to insert two crossings, and drawing attention to the fence round the water-race and the decking on the small bridge opposite their house. —Left to the engineer to attend to. From AV. S. Patten (Te Hero) asking that drains in the district be cleaned. Some time ago weeds had been practically dragged aside, but ( the job had not proved satisfactory. . The matter had been left as the weather at the time was cold: it. was non time to attend to it.—Left to the engineer and Air Coley. Cr. Coley thought the drains were below sea level, and that very little could be done. He wuul go with the engineer to inspect. Cr. Harkness though there wus feel- | ing over the matter. From Harper and Atmore (Otuki t enclosing documents relative to the dedication of public road (Byron Brown’s) sub-division at the Otaki I beach. In order to complete the re- j gisteration of the transfer it was | necessary to have the Council’s consent to the dedication endorsed on the I transfer, and they would be- pleased of the Council would have the consent j executed. —Seal of Council to be ; affixed. From Harper and Atmore (Otaki i ; complaining on behalf of Hema te Ao ! of the Council removing metal without his authority from the bed of the Ohau stream adjoining his property, and asking for an account showing the amount of nietal taken. —No action. Front Secretary Education Association (Levin) asking for the Council to appoint a representative to attend the annual meeting to be held in Levin on the 29th inst.—Cr. Harkness appointed. From Otaki Town Board, asking the Council to assist, as usual, in the annual clearing of the Mangapouri creek. Left to the engineer to attend to. From D. Banks (AYeraroa) asking that the gravel pit be fenced, as in its present state it was very dangerous. A. Palmer also wrote threatening to erect the fence at the expense oi "Banks, and hold him responsible for any damage. —Referred to Cr. Hark ness and the engineer to enquire into, v.-ith power to act. Front Park and Adams stating th? Under-Secretary of Public AVorks had agreed to the issue of a proclamation exempting a road at Kuku from section 117 of the P.AV. Act. provided the i road was widened to 40ft. —Seal of the 1 Council to be attached as soon as Air Saint had affixed his signature.
