ON THE GREEN.
OPENING OF OTAKI BOWLING AND CROQUET CLUBS.
Glorious weather prevailed on Wed nesday, when the opening ceremony connection with the above clubs too! place. In consequence of the lovelv weather and the fact that playerwere keen, there was a largo attend ance, and enthusiasm prevailed from start to finish. The Otaki Brass Band was in attendance and discoursed spirited music, which was fully appreciated, while the afternoon tea pro vided by the ladies was most appetising and enjoyed. Among those present were visitors-from Foxton, .'shun non, and Levin, and these, with mem bers of the local bowling club, took .1 keen and active interest iu play. Mr H. Witche!!. the club’.- preside:” iu the course of a few opening 1 “ marks, reminded those- present that the opening day last season was unfavourable. Things were much brighte: now, but still there was turmoil, which, he considered, might be got over if all parties concerned joined in bowls and by so doing forgot then differences. It was hoepd to have the Mcßeath Shield on exhibition, but it had not come to hand. Mr Witched then referred to the donor, Mrs Me Beaik. as a good sport and a staunch supporter of the club. After this Iv extended a welcome to the visitors and took the opportunity of saying that he hoped the Otaki Club would see that its members paid mot" visits to the northern townships than previously, despite the fact that the club was linked up with the Wellington Centre. After referring to the fine order of the green, due to ihiwork of the caretaker (Mr W. H. Reynolds), he declared the'season open. Mrs Witeliell then rolled the iirst ball with true aim and amidst upplause. The croquet lawn ’-va-- then declare.! officially open, after which play iu general was indulged in. The greens, on the whole, wen- m good order, and play throughout the afternoon was interesting. During the afternoon competitions were held for trophies given by MU Witchell, Messrs L. St. George and li. Nicolson. The contests proved both keen and enjoyable, and the wiiinf.iv were as follow:, —Running the hoop-;. Mrs Pave Noble; hitting the siica. Mrs Dug. Webster; hoops. Mrs Pole.
